The White Glove Treatment

Before going to print or on the screen, big projects require a final inspection, beyond the copyedit. Once the writers have completed the draft, the copyeditors have marked corrections, and the rewriters have incorporated changes and revisions, the proofreaderknown as the "third eye"inspects the entire project one final time to ensure an error-free end product.

Conducting the Inspection

Concepts in Communication will examine your revised, ready-for-production copy in detail to verify that edits were appropriately incorporated, ensure consistency in document structure and page layout, and check for errors or ambiguities that may have slipped in during prior stages. We offer two types of proofreading:

Comparison proofreading. Checking your revised document against the previous version.

Cold proofreading. Checking only your revised document.

Document Format

Proofreading is generally done in the same medium as the final presentation: hard copy for printed materials and electronic copy for electronic materials.

Hard copy. Corrections and comments on hard copy are hand-written in the margins using proofreader's marks.

Electronic files. Corrections and comments on electronic files are entered directly into the document using Word's Track Changes feature.
